Monumental Mattie

Martha (Mattie) Hughes Cannon was the first woman in the United States to be elected to a state senate. She is a remarkable figure and a testament to the strength and endurance of women.

This art piece, which stands 20’ x 20’, was created by collaborating with the Salt Palace Convention Center in downtown Salt Lake City. The piece is created using carpet samples, which were repurposed from a carpet convention.

Four pallets full of carpet samples were donated for the project. The carpet samples were removed from the backing board and organized based on shade. The backing was laid out to make a grid on which the carpet samples were placed. The piece was constructed in a garage with limited space and so the art piece had to be constructed in parts.

The piece was assembled at the Salt Palace Convention Center over a two week period, with the help of staff from the Convention Center.

It is currently located near the Convention Center’s 100 S West Temple Entrance
